RIDE "A" - 4 - 6 HOURS
TAKE 19 TO 276S AND HEAD TOWARDS WAYNESVILLE. CONTINUE ON 276 THROUGH WAYNESVILLE. YOU WILL GO THROUGH CRUSO AND BETHEL. GO PAST THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY. YOU WILL PASS SOME BEAUTIFUL WATERFALLS. TAKE YOUR TIME TO STOP AND LOOK AT THE FALLS. THERE WILL BE LOOKING GLASS FALLS AND SLIDING ROCK. IF IT'S WARM YOU CAN SLIDE DOWN. DEPENDING ON THE TIME OF THE YEAR, THERE MAY BE A SMALL FEE TO PARK TO WALK DOWN TO SLIDING ROCK (WELL WORTH IT). IT'S A BLAST TO WATCH EVERYONE GO DOWN THE ROCKS.
CONTINUE ON 276 TO BREVARD TURN RIGHT ON 64. IT WILL BE A 4 LANE HIGHWAY FOR JUST A LITTLE BIT. YOU ARE HEADING TOWARDS CASHIERS AND SAPPHIRE VALLEY. GO THROUGH SAPPHIRE VALLEY AND CONTINUE INTO CASHIERS (NICE SHOPS). YOU WILL THEN CONTINUE ON TO HIGHLANDS (MORE SHOPS AND PLACES TO EAT).
AFTER STRETCHING YOUR LEGS HEAD BACK NORTH ON 64/28. THIS WILL BE HEADING TOWARDS FRANKLIN. WHAT A GREAT RIDE THIS IS. MORE WATERFALLS AND BEAUTIFUL SCENERY. YOU WILL PASS BRIDAL VEIL FALLS, THEN DRY FALLS (STOP, GET OUT AND WALK DOWN TO SEE THE FALLS), TAKE A PICTURE. THEN YOU WILL PASS CULLASAJA FALLS.
NOW YOU WILL BE COMING INTO FRANKLIN. GO NORTH ON 441. THIS WILL BE A 4 LANE ROAD THAT WILL TAKE YOU TO DILLSBORO (GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN RAILROAD IS THERE). MERGE ONTO 23/74, WHICH WILL TAKE YOU BY DILLSBORO AND SYLVA. YOU CAN CONTINUE ON 23/74 TO 276 WHICH IS WHERE YOU BEGAN OR YOU CAN GET ON THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY AND GO TOWARDS THE SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK. THIS WILL BRING YOU TO HIGHWAY 19, JUST A FEW MILES FROM MAGGIE VALLEY.
WE HAVE GONE ON THIS RIDE WITH FRIENDS AND MY HUSBAND THINKS THIS IS BETTER THAN THE DRAGON'S TAIL.
RIDE "B" - 2 TO 3 HOURS SHORTER VERSION OF RIDE "A".
TAKE HWY 19 TO 276S AND HEAD TOWARDS WAYNESVILLE. CONTINUE ON 276 THROUGH WAYNESVILLE. YOU WILL PASS THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY. YOU WILL ALSO PASS LOOKING GLASS FALLS (PLEASE STOP AND LOOK) AND SLIDING ROCK (GOTTA STOP AND SEE EVERYONE SLIDING DOWN). HERE IS WHERE YOU WILL TURN AROND AND HEAD BACK UP TO THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY ON 276. GET ON THE PARKWAY AND HEAD SOUTH (TOWARDS CHEROKEE). NEXT EXIT IS 215. GET OFF AT 215 AND HEAD NORTH (TOWARDS WAYNESVILLE). THIS WILL BRING YOU BACK TO 215 AND76. HEAD NORTH ON 276 BACK INTO WAYNESVILLE.
RIDE "C" - 5 TO 7 HOURS HERE'S HOW TO GET TO DEAL'S GAP
TAKE 19 INTO CHEROKEE AND BRYSON CITY. FOLLOW THE SIGNS FOR 19S. IN BRYSON CITY YOU WILL GET ON THE 4 LANE HIGHWAY 19/74 (JUST A FEW MILES). CONTINUE ON 19/74 THROUGH NANTAHALA GORGE. WATCH THE RAFTERS AND KAYAKS (IF YOU HAVE TIME GRAB A BITE TO EAT AT THE NANTAHALA OUTDOOR CENTER). CONTINUE ON TO 129N. TURN RIGHT ON 129 AND HEAD TOWARDS ROBBINSVILLE. GO THROUGH ROBBINSVILLE AND CONTINUE NORTH ON 129 (WATCH THE SIGNS). YOU WILL PASS LAKE SANTEETIAH. 129 WILL TAKE YOU DIRECTLY TO THE BOTTOM OF DEAL'S GAP. THERE IS A SMALL CONVENIENCE STORE THERE WITH SANDWICHES, CHIPS AND DRINKS. ALSO SOME GAS PUMPS TOO. YOU'LL SEE THE BIG DEAL'S GAP SIGN.
AFTER RIDING THE GAP (WE RODE UP TO THE LAKE AND STOP AT THE PULL OUT WITH PICNIC TABLES TO TAKE A BREAK) YOU WILL COME BACK AND GET ON 28 AND HEAD HOME. 28 WILL TAKE YOU BY FONTANA DAM (AN EVEN GREATER RIDE) AND FONTANA LAKE. CONTINUE ON 28 TO 19/74. HEAD TOWARDS SYLVA, CHEROKEE. YOU CAN TAKE 441 THROUGH CHEROKEE TO HWY 19 INTO MAGGIE VALLEY. MY HUSBAND AND I WITH 4 OTHER COUPLES TOOK THIS RIDE. IT WAS GREAT AND IT WAS AN ALL DAY TRIP TOO.
RIDE "D" - 3 TO 5 HOURS
THIS WILL TAKE YOU THROUGH ASHEVILLE, BAT CAVE, CHIMNEY ROCK AND TO LAKE LURE.
HWY 19 TO 23/74. FOLLOW THIS ROAD TO I-40.
TAKE I-40 EAST TO ASHEVILLE. TAKE EXIT 53 (HWY 74A). IT WILL TAKE YOU INTO BAT CAVE AND CHIMNEY ROCK. GRAB YOUR HIKING BOOTS AND CHECK-OUT CHIMNEY ROCK. IF YOU JUST WANT TO SEE THE VIEW, YOU THE ELEVATOR TO THE TOP, CHECK THINGS OUT AND RIDE IT BACK DOWN. KEEP FOLLOWING 74A TO LAKE LURE. MAKE SURE YOU PLAN IT AROUND TIME TO HAVE A SNACK, LUNCH, OR DRINK (THEY SERVE ALCOHOL) CALLED MARGARITAVILLE. IT IS A GREAT LITTLE PLACE TO TAKE A BREAK.
HEAD BACK TO MAGGIE VALLEY ON 74A. WHEN YOU GET TO 64 HEAD TOWARDS HENDERSONVILLE. GET ON I-26 NORTH. GET OFF AT EXIT 37 (OLD EXIT 6) HIGHWAY 146 AND HEAD WEST TOWARDS WEST HAVEN. TURN RIGHT ON CLAYTON ROAD AND FOLLOW THIS TO 191 NORTH. TURN RIGHT ON 191, STAY ON 191 UNTIL YOU GET TO THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY. HEAD SOUTH TOWARDS CHEROKEE/GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAINS NATIONAL PARK. THE NEXT EXIT WILL BE HIGHWAY 151, GET OFF AND HEAD NORTH. GREAT LITTLE SECLUDED ROAD. YOU WILL END UP AT CANDLER. AT THE STOP LIGHT IN CANDLER TURN LEFT ON 19/74/23 FOLLOW THIS TO CANTON, THEN CLYDE. LOOK FOR THE SIGNS FOR 19 IN CANTON. THEN HEAD HOME.
THIS RIDE HAS A FEW 4 LANES IN IT. YOU CAN MAKE IT LONGER BY TAKING THE BACKROADS.
RIDE "E" - 5 TO 7 HOURS
THIS GOES THROUGH THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK INTO TENNESSEE AND BACK THROUGH THE CHEROHALA SKYWAY.
HEAD NORTH ON 19 FROM MAGGIE VALLEY INTO CHEROKEE. IN CHEROKEE YOU WILL TURN RIGHT ON 441N TOWARDS THE GREAT SMOKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK (YOU COULD TAKE THE BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY TOO). THERE IS A VISITORS CENTER AT THE ENTRANCE TO THE PARK (IF YOU NEED A BATHROOM BREAK), THAT HAS INFORMATION IN IT. AT THE TOP IS NEWFOUND GAP (GOTTA STOP AND LOOK OUT THERE). CLINGMAN'S DOME WILL BE ON YOUR RIGHT. CONTINUE NORTH ON 441 TO THE SUGARLANDS VISITORS CENTER (THIS IS RIGHT BEFORE YOU WOULD HEAD INTO GATLINBURG, TN. YOU CAN GO TO CADE'S COVE HERE TOO, BUT IT TAKES QUITE A WHILE AND IT IS A ONE LANE, ONE WAY LOOP WITH VERY SLOW TRAFFIC. IF NOT WHEN YOU COME OUT OF THE VISITORS CENTER, TURN RIGHT ON LITTLE RIVER ROAD AND THEN TURN RIGHT ONTO 337. YOU WILL GO INTO TOWNSEND, TN. 337 WILL MERGE WITH 321. STAY ON 321S UNTIL YOU SEE THE FOOTHLLS PARKWAY. HEAD SOUTH ON TEH FOOTHILLS PARKWAY. THIS WILL DEAD-END INTO 129. TURN RIGHT.
FOLLOW-129/115 UNTIL YOU GET TO 72, THEN TURN LEFT. FOLLOW 72 UNTIL YOU GET TO 441/33, WHICH IS A CONTINUATION OF 72. CONTINUE UNTIL YOU GET TO 360 AND TURN LEFT. FOLLOW 360 SOUTH TOWARDS TELICO PLAINS. WHEN YOU REACH 165, TURN LEFT (EAST) AND THIS WILL PUT YOU ON THE CHEROHALA SKYWAY. WHEN YOU REACH THE NORTH CAROLINA BORDER, THE ROAD WILL CHANGE TO 143 AND WILL WIND UP AT 129, NEAR ROBBINSVILLE. TAKE 129 THROUGH ROBBINSVILLE AND HEAD EAST ON 19(74/23). YOU CAN EITHER TAKE THE 4 LANE NORTH INTO CHEROKEE AND TAKE 19 TO MAGGIE VALLEY OR CONTINUE ON 19(74/23) TO THE MAGGIE VALLEY EXIT.
RIDE 'F' AND "G" 3 - 4 HOURS
TAKE 276S (WAYNESVILLE) TO U.S. 64 AT SAPPHIRE TURN LEFT ON NC 281 (WATERFALL RIDE) CONTINUE UNTIL YOU REACH THE ENTRANCE TO WHITEWATER FALLS. AMAZING RIDE.
ALSO, TAKE HWY 209 TO HOT SPRINGS. HWY 209 WILL BEAR TO THE RIGHT IF COMING FROM WAYNESVILLE IN FRONT OF FERGUSON'S GENERAL STORE. AMAZING SCENERY ALONG THE NATIONAL FOREST AND GREAT RESTAURANTS ON THE RIVER IN HOT SPRINGS TOO. THIS WILL TAKE YOU ABOUT 2 HRS.
